Dear Ms. Rodwell,

Since receiving my first laptop back in the second grade, I’ve had an interest in electronics. Although at the time I didn’t know that computer engineering was the career path that I wanted to pursue, I had, at an early age, found an infatuation that would stand the test of time.

From early in my high school career my parents and other family members in my extended family began to encourage me to pick my desired career path early so that I would enter the work force as soon as possible. During that time, I had to sit through many lectures from everyone pushing me towards areas of study that they thought would ensure my success in the future and bring prestige to my name. For a time, I gave in and I accepted that it would be best to live my life doing what others wanted me to do. But as the beginning of my senior year approached, I realized that in order to truly succeed I needed to decide on something that fit my interests. Something that I would look forward to facing obstacles and adversity for.

After much self-reflection and making realizations about what I truly desired, I realized that computer engineering is the right field of study for me. It’s half electrical engineering and

half computer science composition makes it ideal in terms of versatility. The scope of the computer engineering curriculum will open a wide array of internship opportunities and science competitions for me. Through my four years of college I hope to take part in several internships and relevant science competitions and because computer engineering is such a vast field, I believe that I will discover my niche in no time. My main goal in terms of my education is to gain knowledge through both experience and a regular classroom setting. When I graduate and enter the workforce, I wish to have an extensive resumé that paints the picture that employers are looking for.

As far as long term goals are concerned, I want to ultimately acquire my Master of Business and Administration at an accredited university such as Harvard and turn my skills and experiences into a business. Although I don’t have an exact idea of what specifically I would create a business for, I intend to figure that out through my time in college and my first few jobs in the field.

As people are becoming more reliant on technology for their day to day lives, I believe the need for engineers will only grow. In my future I hope to use engineering to make a bigger impact on society I don’t want to just work for the gain of corporations and other entities

in the capitalist system we live in today. I want to solve societal and environmental issues such as poverty, global warming and extinction using the tools I acquire in my formal education and in my occupation.

Aside from career goals, I want to grow as a human being through my time at this institution. I don’t just want to find my place in the world of engineering. I want to build priceless relationships and have experiences that will follow me for the rest of my life.

Sincerely Yours,
